Rich. Bold. Addictive. Have I got your attention?

Nope, I'm not talking about coffee--I'm talking about chocolate! I found these David Bradley Chocolatier Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothies during a layover at JFK Airport at Harmony Health and Beauty.  From looking at the label, it appeared as if they were gluten-free but I contacted the manufacturer to confirm and they have assured me that they are. (Be aware, though, that their products containing pretzels, their graham crackers and their chocolate chip cookies, are NOT gluten-free.) Their tagline of "Rich.Bold.Addictive" is spot-on as this treat is all three. Enjoy!

Ancient Harvest Gluten Free Organic Quinoa Pasta Mentioned in Prevention


Prevention's March 2013 issue touts a recipe for Spaghetti with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce and features Ancient Harvest Gluten Free Organic Quinoa Pasta. The pasta is apparently GMO-free and sold in seven different cuts.Prep time for the recipe is 15 minutes with a total time of 25 minutes. Nutritional information is included. Recipe appears on page 125.  So glad to see more gluten-free products spotlighted in magazines these days!

"Sneaky" Celiac Disease mentioned in Natural Health Magazine


The January/February issue of Natural Health Magazine features a blurb on page 28 discussing how--according to the Mayo Clinic--about 1.8million people have celiac disease. It also mentions--according to a study published inThe American Journal of Gastroenterology--that about 1.6million people are eating gluten-free. If that's the case, here's my question: why is a loaf of gluten-free bread (and other products) still so expensive? I'm currently paying between $5.50 and $6 per loaf at my local (chain) grocery store.  How about you?

Gluten-Free Vodka seen in THE GOOD LIFE central new york MAGAZINE


For those of you in the CNY area--or those planning to visit--check out page 54 of the November/December issue ofTHE GOOD LIFE central new york MAGAZINE. You'll find a blurb in their Holiday section about Beak & Skiff Farm Distillery's premium small-batch apple vodka. As you'll see from the photo, there is a sticker on the bottle that classifies it as "Gluten Free!" I had the pleasure of visiting Beak & Skiff last fall and found it to be quite the local treasure. I would highly recommend a visit. Makes for a nice family outing when the apples are ready for picking. I would also recommend picking up a copy of THE GOOD LIFE; it is an intelligent, beautifully crafted publication that highlights the best of CNY.

Gluten-Free Mention in Natural Health Magazine


In the November/December issue of Natural Health, there is an article titled, "10 Ways to Go Natural" on page 16.Tip No.7 is about finding a "nicer" rice cereal. Rice Krispies is mentioned for its "slightly healthier and gluten-free version" of the original well-loved cereal. Now, children (and adults alike!) can enjoy Rice Krispies Treats or even a bowl of this brown rice-based cereal. Kudos to both Natural Health for the mention and to Kellogg's for recognizing the growing gluten-free community.

Gluten-Free? Yup, there's an app for that...


The December/January 2013 issue of Living Without boasts an article on page 20 titled, "Gluten and Allergy Apps." The article discusses several apps that appear to be helpful if you want to dine out but have food allergies or celiac disease, or if you just need help planning meals and cooking at home.  A list titled, "Helpful Apps" appears on page 25. In addition to the apps listed, I found "Gluten Free Near Me" which is free to Android users.

Gluten-Free Info in Prevention Magazine/December Issue


The "Nourish" (Eat for your health) section of December's Prevention has a blurb titled, "Should You Go Gluten Free?"  (Page 19.) It basically states that the only people who should consider going gluten-free are those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. While true, it's unfortunate that the article cuts off right after information presented by Alessio Fasano, MD, director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland about why people should not cut gluten from their diets prior to diagnosis (it makes a condition like celiac disease harder to diagnose.) It's always a pleasure to hear from Dr. Fasano--wish there had been room for more information!

For the Seafood Lover


For those following a gluten-free diet who also happen to love fried foods, one of the most frustrating things is that so many of these foods are coated or filled, with  breadcrumbs. I haven't found gluten-free meatballs yet (though you'd think they'd accompany the gluten-free pasta that's out there in certain restaurants!) but I did find some great crab cakes that you can easily heat up at home.

Blue Horizon Wild ( makes gluten-free  "Maryland Style Crab Cakes." They come frozen, two per box and I found them at Wegmans ( The box claims they are a "good alternative" for "sustainability" and contain Omega-3s. While the sodium count is high (510mg per cake), the flavor is great. If you're concerned about too much sodium (and who isn't these days) perhaps try one cake as part of a well-balanced meal that includes a salad and vegetables.
